For New York 2016, SCOPE has teamed with BMI to present The SCOPE Official Party on Saturday, March 5 at Marquee, featuring an intimate live performance with emerging artist, Zebra Katz, whom The Guardian calls “minimal, menacing and intoxicating..”.
With music by DJ Jasmine Solano, The SCOPE Official Party will also be the subject of a video feature from Ilegal Mezcal’s Music Series.
BMI was founded in 1939 by forward-thinkers who wanted to represent songwriters in emerging genres, like jazz, blues and country, and protect the public performances of their music. Operating on a non-profit-making basis, BMI is now the largest music rights organization in the U.S. and is still nurturing new talent and new music.
BMI is the bridge between songwriters and the businesses and organizations that want to play their music publicly. As a global leader in music rights management, BMI serves as an advocate for the value of music, representing more than 10.5 million musical works created and owned by more than 700,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers.
Ilegal was born out of John Rexer’s bar, Café No Sé, an eclectic international watering hole in colonial Antigua, Guatemala. “Ilegal has texture and is not diluted and polluted by an industrial process,” says Rexer. “It’s like old hand-tooled leather versus cheap pleather. It’s seductive. People from all walks of life understand the difference. It’s a way of thinking and wanting to live as much as it is fine liquor.”
In January 2013, Marquee New York, the legendary Chelsea nightclub that defined a generation of New York nightlife, reopened as an internationally acclaimed music destination, attracting the most in-demand DJs and live acts. Designed by Josh Held, the designer of W Hotels and Bar Americain, Marquee has transformed into a tripped out warehouse with 28 ft. ceilings and industrial design accents, including chandeliers constructed from functioning microphones, exposed equalizers, walls covered in recycled leather belts and welded rebar handrails. The venue also includes jaw-dropping sound and visual elements, including a Funktion-One sound system with floor-to-ceiling LED feature wall and computerized moving light system, engineered to feel like an indoor music festival experience. Marquee also has locations in Las Vegas at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and at The Star Sydney in Sydney, Australia.
