The Bowery becomes a nexus of shattered dreams when a merchant has 72 hours to pay his rent. Facing extinction, his ramshackle tent of antiquities lures a troop of misfits, freaks and renegades who form a tableaux vivant full of carnival pageantry, white lies and
victimless crime in a fleeting glimpse of Downtown New York.

Tethered to either end of a single rope, movement in this vertical habitat for two depends on the opposite movement by one's roommate. When one wishes to go up to the kitchen, the other must go down to the bathroom.

Counterweight Roommate is a self-contained living unit and will be continuously inhabited for the full five days of SCOPE Basel by performance-architecture artists Alex Schweder La and Ward Shelley.

BLANK a concept developed by an interdisciplinary team of nine students use “space” to design the SCOPE Basel 2011 Lounge Masterstudio Design Basel. Wir sind zum Gespräch mit Patrick Tschan verabredet. Zur Debatte steht die Loungegestaltung für die Scope Basel 2011 durch uns Studenten. Aus der damals noch vagen Vorstellung, wie es sein könnte - im interdisziplinären Team von neun Personen - die Konzeption und das Design für eine solche Aufgabe zu übernehmen, ist heute Ehrgeiz und Leidenschaft gewachsen. Mit der Installation blank wird sich der Masterstudiengang Design im Juni diesen Jahres während der Scope präsentieren. Der Name ist Programm - blank kann sowohl deutsch als auch englisch gelesen werden. Synonyme im Deutschen sind glanzvoll, enthüllt und offenkundig. Aus dem Englischen übersetzt sich das Wort mit Bahn, Leerstelle oder Zuschnitt. Um die Kommunikation in der Lounge zu unterstützen, sieht der Entwurf einen Freiraum für das Gespräch vor. Gestalterisch übersetzt, bedeutet dies das Einziehen einer horizontalen Farbfläche, die Gesicht und Torso einen Rahmen gibt. Die Farbe als Form. Die Leerstelle als Blickfang. Somit wird die räumliche Herausforderung des offenen Bereichs zum Konzept: ein intimer Ort ohne tatsächliche Abgrenzung oder Barriere. Mit einer eleganten Möblierung im Biedermeierstil lädt die Lounge ihre Gäste zum Gespräch und Verweilen ein, ohne dabei gestrig zu wirken. Die Möbel werden im neuen Kontext gezeigt, die Färbung birgt den modernen Aspekt. Sowohl Hinterhof als auch die Kabar werden den kulinarischen Part übernehmen, sodass man sich einem vielseitigem Angebot an erstklassigen Getränken und feinem Fingerfood gewiss sein kann. Mit einer Prise Witz und Charme das Loungen lustvoll gestalten - blank.

Invisible Heros The new installation, Frieden Freiheit Alles (Peace Liberty Everything) 2011, by Comenius Roethlisberger and Admir Jahic features an elaborate display of wooden hands all making a Corna hand Gesture. The Corna has a variety of meanings and is used in various cultures. For example, during an European Union meeting in 2002, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi did this gesture during a meeting while posing for a picture. When asked why, he answered, "I did it because it's fun". *This gesture is formed by extending the index and little fingers while holding the middle and ring fingers down with the thumb.

June 14 & 15 8 pm Kaserne Basel After all, things will never be the same again, so let's make history. On a not particularly special day, in a not particularly special place Gob Squad will save the world before it ends. From sunrise to sunset, they will try to get everything they can onto a very very wide screen film. It’s a Noah´s Ark for the 21st Century. In Saving The World, Gob Squad squeezes the world into a handful of videotapes. Produced in 24 hours, a seven camera panoramic film portrays Basel’s Claraplatz, (a square located a short walk from Scope), as a microcosm of the entire world. Starting with 'saving' the sunrise, Gob Squad soon moves on to 'saving' the essentials of life on earth such as money, freedom, ice cream and love. Gob Squad is a group of UK and German artists, working collectively with performance, theater, installation and video since 1994. Based in Nottingham and Berlin the group makes and presents its work in urban sites such as offices, houses, shops, railway stations and hotels as well as in galleries and theaters.

Since its inception The SCOPE Foundation, now THE CENTER, has worked with individual artists, curators, and other not-for-profit institutions in
a wide variety of mediums, including Film, Video Installation, Performance and Sound. Focusing
