HEBRU BRANTLEY  |  INSTALLATION  |  EXHIBITION FLOOR

Courtesy of Hebru Brand Studios

Step back in time, not to the dusty carny attractions of yore, but to a vibrant reimagining of the 1920s and 30s carnival freakshow. Here, the classic "oddities" are reinterpreted by the creations of artist Hebru Brantley. This installation celebrates the rich tapestry of African American culture and history, infusing the fantastical elements of old circus acts with the vibrant, empowering aesthetics of AfriCobra. Through canvas paintings and dynamic artworks surrounded by the glow of carnival lights, Black Oddyssey invites you to journey through a world where imagination and reality intertwine. Experience the nostalgia and wonder of circus sideshows, reimagined through the lens of African American creativity and resilience. Hebru Brantley's well known characters Flyboy and Lil Mama, take the stage once again, but this time in a different light. These beloved figures become the "circus attractions.” Forget the "bearded lady" — here you'll encounter the "Unusual Frog Boy" (Phibby) and Flyboy himself taking flight, his adventures painted with a touch of the fantastical. This exhibition serves as a playful commentary on the theatrical nature of viewing art. Visitors aren't just observers; they become participants in the carnival spectacle, drawn into the vibrant world Hebru has created. The Black Oddyssey is a dazzling immersion into a world where art and entertainment collide. This installation not only honors the past but also celebrates the enduring spirit and artistry that continue to shape our cultural landscape. It is a celebration of culture, nostalgia, and the sheer joy of artistic expression.

ESTHER MAHLANGU  |  INSTALLATION  |  EXHIBITION FLOOR

Courtesy of The Melrose Gallery

The Melrose Gallery is proud to unveil ‘Ukuthula Makube Nawe’ (Peace Be With You), a rare monumental 8m x 2m painting and solo exhibition by Dr Esther Mahlangu. Bettina Korek, CEO, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, the artistic director of the Serpentine in London, recently said ‘Esther Mahlangu is one of the most important artists of our time’ as they unveiled her mural in Serpentine North earlier this month. This is a rare opportunity for US audiences and those attending Miami Art Week to see a solo exhibition by one of the few African artists of her generation who have successfully been able to break into the international museum and arts sector.

Dr Mahlangu is 89 years old and has made an invaluable contribution to contemporary art over 7 decades. When she is asked what message she is trying to convey via the abstract shapes and bright colors in her Ndebele-inspired paintings, she says ‘it is not so much meaning that I am trying to convey than a feeling of peace, calm and tranquility in the viewer which is created through the balance of sacred geometry.’ It is her hope that this monumental painting helps to send a message of peace to the world at a time in which this is desperately needed. The Melrose Gallery is Dr Mahlangu’s exclusive global representative. Located in Johannesburg, South Africa, this leading Pan African Contemporary Gallery represents several of South Africa’s most established artists and an exciting stable of emerging and mid-career artists from the Continent of Africa.

WALLS  |  INSTALLATION  |  BEACHFRONT

SCOPE continues to bring the world of art to unconventional settings. This year the SCOPE Walls, a series of murals, will be featured at SCOPE on the sands of Miami Beach. This project is a continuation of SCOPE’s mission to work globally while thinking locally, impacting the art industry as a whole with a profound respect for the surrounding community.

LUCY SPARROW  |  INSTALLATION  |  EXHIBITION FLOOR

Lucy Sparrow will invite art lovers to feed their joy and increase their intake of fruits and veggies as she unveils her latest handmade felt installation - Blessed Be the Fruit. This fully stocked technicolor Farmer’s Market will feature an opulent display of over 6,000 individually sewn felt fruits and vegetables alongside a collection of 50 framed still-life artworks.

Lucy’s series of ‘Produce family portraits’ is a humorous collection of works that show the artist’s signature smiling fruits and vegetables given a voice for the first time. Another series of new two-dimensional felt works are based on vintage produce advertising; from Georgia peaches and Kentucky apples to Flor’da sweet oranges and California Mountain pears, the whole American harvest has been felted, framed, and featured on the walls of this immersive exhibit.

THE DOWNTOWN FESTIVAL  |  FILM SCREENING

The Downtown Festival is a celebration of emerging and established independent artists across film, music, art, and culture in New York City. These artists and their work contribute to the fabric of “downtown” and the festival reflects that special convergence of various disciplines. The Festival showcases up-and-coming talent alongside established icons through dynamic and exciting film screenings, music performances, panel discussions, and special events. Attendees are invited to experience a diverse array of voices and unique perspectives on the forefront of artistic expression.
